Shamanic and Traditional Use
E. lageniformis, like other cacti in its family, has been used in shamanic practices in its native region.
Psychoactive Properties
The plant has mescaline and other psychoactive substances that cause its effects.
Varied Mescaline Content
Mescaline concentrations can vary significantly between different specimens and locations, with some Bolivian Torch cacti potentially having higher levels than other species, such as San Pedro – Echinopsis pachanoi.
Ancient Use
Archaeological evidence suggests that psychoactive cacti, including those related to E. lageniformis, have been used for thousands of years in the Andes regions.
Cultural Heritage
Some traditional uses of related cacti, such as the San Pedro cactus, have been recognised as cultural heritage.
