Echinopsis

Echinopsis is a genus of cacti that is native to South America. It is also known as hedgehog cactus, sea-urchin cactus or Easter lily cactus. The flowers of this cactus are remarkable for their great size, length of tube, and beauty. They are usually borne upon small and dumpy stems.

As of October 2023, Plants of the World Online accepts Echinopsis as a genus that includes only about 20 species. Two other genera, Trichocereus and Lobivia, are now included with Echinopsis. The larger, columnar members are known as Trichocereus. At the same time, Lobivia includes a select group of smaller, not-as-spiny plants that typically flower from low on the plant, similar to most Rebutia species. This means most plants referred to as Echinopsis are mostly spiny, ribbed, globose plants.
