Description
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii var. friedrichii is a small, slow-growing, flattened, globose cactus with a dark purplish-maroon stem and 8 to 14 sharp ribs with dark markings and lighter crossbands. The areoles are thick with 3 to 6 short, twisted, light-to-dark brown radial spines; central spines are usually absent.
Unlike the popular “Moon Cactus”, which consists of a colourful top (scion) grafted onto a green base cactus (rootstock), usually of the Hylocereus genus, this wild or normal form does not lack chlorophyll and therefore can grow its own root system.
