Description

Selenicereus costaricensis is a cactus with distinctive stems. Its thick, climbing stems usually have three (or sometimes four) ribs. The margins of these ribs can be straight or slightly wavy. The stems are green and may look waxy, with areoles that have short, dark spines. The areoles also have bristle-like hairs that eventually fall off. This plant is grown for its fruit, known as pitaya or pitahaya in Spanish, and is commonly called dragon fruit. Additionally, it makes an attractive ornamental vine with large, beautiful flowers.
