Albuca

Albuca is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae. These plants are found mainly in southern and eastern Africa, with some species also present in northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Commonly known as slime lilies, these are perennial herbs that grow from bulbs. The stem is surrounded by leaves that have linear to strap-shaped blades.

The genus Albuca comprises about 60 known species, and possibly about 100 species in total. Some authorities have classified Albuca in a wider sense, including related genera such as Stellarioides, Coilonox, Trimelopter, and Battandiera, for a total of 110 to 180 species. At times, all of these genera, including Albuca, have been grouped together in Ornithogalum, but molecular phylogenetics studies support their separation.
