Curio radicans is native to southern Africa and parts of western Pakistan, where it has been used in ethnomedicine for a long time.
Wound Healing and Anti-Inflammatory
Traditionally, the plant has been applied to treat wounds and reduce inflammation.
Antimicrobial Activity
Lab tests show that extracts from the plant work well against many types of bacteria (like E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus) and fungi (such as Aspergillus niger). This supports its traditional use in treating microbial infections.
Antioxidant and Genoprotective Effects
Studies indicate that the extracts contain antioxidants, which help lower cellular damage and protect human DNA.
Phytochemical analysis has revealed a rich profile of compounds, including:
- Alkaloids
- Flavonoids
- Tannins
- Phenolic acids (e.g., caffeic acid, salicylic acid, fumaric acid, ellagic acid)
Important Safety Note: Toxicity
Despite its promising compounds for potential pharmaceutical development, Curio radicans is a toxic plant, and it should be handled with care and kept out of reach of children and animals.
