Mesembryanthemum

The plants in this group have succulent leaves, bright shiny-petalled flowers, and hygrochastic fruit, meaning the capsules open when it rains. Mesembryanthemum plants can be annual or perennial. Their leaves are usually opposite, sometimes alternate, and can be simple, free at the base, or united into single, conical to spherical bodies that often sheath the stem. The leaves’ shape may be flat, 3-angled, or cylindrical.
